The jurisdiction of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Mumbai stretches from the India’s industrial and commercial hub Maharashtra to Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and the state of Goa. Its jurisdiction spreads over the area of 98,000sq.km. which is about 4.5 times the size of the Korean Peninsula and has a population of 270 million.

The jurisdiction areas include major industrial cities such as Hyderabad, Bangalore - known as the Silicon Valley of India, Pune - the city of the fast growing automobile and electronic industries and Surat - the centre of the textile and diamond processing industry of India.

Maharashtra is a highly industrialized state of India. It is the economic core of India which contributes over 20% of India’s total industrial production and over 45% of India’s total exports. The state's capital, Mumbai houses the Reserve Bank of India (India's Central Bank), both of the major stock exchanges - NSE & BSE and headquarters of more than 50 out of the 100 biggest companies in India. It is the country’s commercial and financial capital covering 40% of the country’s revenues and 70% of country's stock trades. It also currently handles more than 60% of country’s cargo containers.

Due to Mumbai's strategic importance, 90 countries have established Consular offices (including about 45 of Honorary Consulates) as of March 2010. Recognizing its potentials and importance, Korea has established not only the Consulate and KOTRA office but also encouraged Hyundai Heavy Industries, Doosan Heavy Industries, LG Chemicals, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Hanjin Shipping, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Shinhan Bank, Mirae Assets and other Korean companies to pursue business opportunities.

With recent Korean economic developments and growing international ties, there has been a significant increase in the number of Indians visiting Korea. Last year, the Korean Consulate in Mumbai issued over 12,000 visas. This has contributed further to strengthening the Indo-Korean ties.

We will continue to provide resourceful information to promote cooperative bilateral relations between Korea and India. Your encouragement and suggestions will greatly help us in building stronger diplomatic relations. Thank you.
